The Truth About Fish Tanks as a Remedy

What it is not

Many  “so called” Feng Shui Practitioners claim that according to the principles of Feng Shui it is an excellent idea to add an aquarium to your home and office.  Furthermore it is often stated that by adding the right number of fish prosperity and good luck will increase.

According to these “Feng Shui Principles” there are different numbers of fish in an aquarium needed to attract:

  • 1 Fish:  Offers new beginnings
  • 3 Fish:  Brings growth and development
  • 6 Fish:  Promotes wealth and prosperity
  • 8 Fish:  Increases money and family stability
  • 9 Fish:  Long Life

Question:  Does it work?  Answer:  Absolutely NOT!

What it is

The reason why this can be considered hocus pocus is that these numbers are misunderstood as they were taken from what is called Zi-Bai Fu known as the Nine Palace Floating Stars.  Each number is associated with one of the Five Elements.  Not that these numbers actually can be considered to be numerology rather than being associated with the element in order to easier ‘rotate’ the elements.  (1 = Water, 3 = Wood, 6 = Metal, 8 = Earth and 9 = Fire)

Furthermore:  When correcting the Feng Shui of any environment we only work with the Five Elements.  Feng Shui Remedies which can not be categorized as either belonging to Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal are not considered a valid cure.  Fish do not belong to any of these five elements.

If, and exactly where Water is indeed needed, can only be established after a complete consultation conducted by an expert.

In any case the water needs to be of sufficient amount based on the size of the “room”, it has to stay clean and it is important to understand that the water needs to be able to evaporate into the air.  As most aquariums have a lid housing the filtration system it is not considered to be an ideal Feng Shui remedy.  Metal or copper fountains are better suited!
