The Art of Feng Shui Color Selection

STOP! Are you thinking about renovating, painting or re-decorating your home? In that case, this is the article you were looking for…

Most homeowners have experienced that gut-wrenching moment where they are standing in front of the vast wall of paint selection chips that is looming menacingly in front of them. Their eyes begin to glaze over, as they become completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of colors.

feng shui colorsOne of the wonderful aspects to the art of Feng Shui is that it guides you to select the proper colors while also giving you a list of colors to avoid. Using a specific palette of colors really helps reduce the frustration involved in choosing what colors to paint your rooms, and has multitudinous additional benefits as well. You can follow him at Google+.

Color is very important in Feng Shui. It helps you use many different colors in the right way. Don’t just pick one color – you may love that favorite blue sweater you have, but that doesn’t mean you should design every room in the house to be blue.

Feng Shui and Outdoor colors

It is important to note that in many cases, different colors are used outside than inside when you are working with Feng Shui.

One of the most important rules of thumb when painting your exterior is to never use more than three paint colors. If you choose a neutral white color for your main exterior, that counts as one of your colors and you would have two more colors available to you after that.

A really smooth way to make the transition from outside the house to inside the house is to bring one interior color to the outside. For example, if you have your interior doors painted a certain color, you can use that same color on your front door, which will help blend the colors and not make the walk from outside a jarring change.

Now we are left with one more color to use, given the above example. By using your Feng Shui calculator, you can determine the sitting and facing directions your house is in and identify its Trigram.

  • North – If your house sits north, you are dealing with the element of water, and need to incorporate blues and blacks.
  • East or Southeast – This direction is paired with the wood element. Use a color in the green range.
  • South – If your house faces south, use red.
  • Northeast and Southwest – Work with beiges or yellow.
  • West and Northwest – Use grays if your house faces this way.

Feng Shui and Indoor Colors

When you are deciding on which colors to grace your walls inside, make sure you base your decision on an extremely accurate and in-depth Feng Shui reading.

Remember that only one of the five elements of wood, fire, water, earth and metal can be used in each quadrant of the bagua map in order to boost the positive energy or significantly reduce the negative. Each element can solve certain issues that you may need to deal with to bring your home into balance.

  • Metal – A creative way to incorporate metal is to put in a metal sculpture or furniture. If you can’t do that, try to use gray, white or gold colors in your decorating.
  • Water – If you can’t put in a mini fountain, use black or blue colors instead.
  • Fire – Be wary of using too much red, but this is the color you need for fire. A small red night light often works very well, especially if it can be left on for 24 hours a day.
  • Earth – You can do a lot with this using ceramics or earth tones.
  • Wood – You can put in houseplants or just use the color green.

Takeaway

The overall goal of using Feng Shui is to make your living space more harmonious and to help positive energy flow into it while banishing negative energy.
